Charles was born July 13, 1936, in Tuscola, to Charles and Mary Breen. He was the eldest of eight children. He married Shirley A. Bennett on Aug. 26, 1956, in Coles County. She preceded him in death on June 28, 2016.

He is survived by his mother and six siblings. Also surviving are his six children, Deidre (Fred) Banks of Wentzville, Mo., Leisa Breen of Urbana, Charles III (Paula) Breen of Bloomington,

Patrick (Charlotte) Breen of Merritt Island, Fla., Emily Taylor of Champaign and Ben Breen of Champaign. Grandchildren are Charles IV, Trevor and Miranda Breen, all of Bloomington, Alina (Matt) Taylor Mills of Austin, Texas, and Zoe Taylor of St. Louis, Mo.

Mr. Breen graduated from Tuscola High School and attended the University of Illinois. With his family, he farmed in Champaign and Douglas counties for over 60 years. In recent years, he served as a commissioner for the Fountain Head Drainage District. He was an avid reader and lifelong learner and was much admired for his candor.
